Are plants and flowers important in everyday living? is it true that they can transform a room dramatically?
Welcome to my blog post about plants and flowers.
Plants are so beneficial for us. Adding them to our home can improve our daily lives elevating our mood. Their green colour can provide us with calmness and a sense of serenity and in combination with their alluring scent can transport us back to nature where we were supposed to be living instead of polluted cities. Much research has proven that people surrounded by plants are happier and healthier. There is an inherent well-being factor that comes with them.
Plants are so beautiful and they can really transform the interior of a house. They can greatly enhance the quality of indoor air that many times can be worse than the air outside, due to fumes from unseen materials in our buildings.
After the covid pandemic, those of us living in London flats without a garden have come to realise the importance of keeping a small part of nature in our homes, which has lifted our spirits and improved our mental health.
“I don't have time for plants and is always a mess when I leave for holidays. I'm never lucky with plants and all the flowers I buy no matter if they are expensive or not, always go bad the next day”
I am just quoting myself a few years ago.
Do you think it requires a lot of time and effort to keep plants at home? The answer is NO as long as you purchase the right indoor plants. It is equally easy if not easier to sustain a vase with flowers at home by just being consistent.
Do some research beforehand. There are so many on line resources that can help us choose what is best for our space so that we are able to support and sustain them. I often use patchplants.com, hortology.co.uk, primrose.co.uk but most times just pop in my local florist and ask for some advice. Even better I visit Columbia Road Flower market in London where I also spend an amazing Sunday morning.
One great example of indoor plants are Terrariums. Either home made or bought can be kept literally for years on end, with a minimum effort. Have you ever opened a terrarium and smelt it? Please do so next time, you will instantly get a boost of nature.
So why not try enrich our home environment with plants? Here are some tips, that will help you revive your love for them.
Create a corner in your house or use the window stools to put plants and bring life to your space. Always go for areas with indirect sunlight.
Play with the colours and designs of the pots, they can really transform the decor.
Use plants on a dull staircase but also inside your bathroom providing there's a window.
If you have a flat with balcony, take advantage of it and have some outdoor plants as well, they will really make your mornings especially during summer.
Buy succulents at the beginning of your journey, you can find them at really good prices and honestly, it's ok if you forget to water them.
Do not throw away old orchid bulbs. There's a smart way to revive them by cutting the entire dead spike and then water what's left every fortnight. Just make sure the roots are still strong and have not turned black or soft.
When you buy cut flowers always ensure to cut the bottom of the stem only a few centimetres and refresh the water daily. This will make the difference and you will be able to keep a bouquet for a week bringing colour and beauty into your home.
Try to water your plants once a week do it after work - it's a great way to unwind and gives you a feeling of accomplishment.
Lastly, always remember like us plants are alive. I've noticed that when they're gathered together they thrive creating their own microclimate, their own network. So why not let them be together?!
Follow these simple ways and trust me! Not only will they enhance your personal space but your well-being too!
